Understanding Trabecular Bone

 

For understanding trabecular bone, you need to take a look at how bones are formed in mammals and vertebrates. The bones are usually comprised of different parts that work together to give the bone its mechanical function and use. In simple words, you can understand a bone as a combination of different components. One of the components of the bone is known as the trabecular bone. The trabecular bone is also known as the cancellous bone, or a spongy bone. There are several functions associated with the trabecular bone, and different structural differences make it unique. The other usual part which makes up the bone is known as the cortical bone, the part of bone which forms the outer area of a bone.

Cortical and Trabecular Bone

The cortical and trabecular bone together make up the entire structure of the bone. Now, in order to understand their function, let’s take a look at their properties. The cortical bone is considered to be the outer part of the bones in the body. It is a stiff bone and has a porosity of about 5 to 10%. The cortical bone is much denser, stiffer and stronger than the trabecular bone. On the other hand, the trabecular bone has a higher surface area and is known to be extremely porous. While the cortical bone forms the outer area of the bone, the trabecular bone makes up the inner part of the bone. The spongy bone, as it is frequently called, is highly vascular and is responsible for blood cell production. The trabecular bone contains the red bone marrow that is responsible for this blood cell production. Trabecula is the name that is given to the primary structures inside a trabecular bone. The trabeculae jointly work together to carry out the regular function of the trabecular bone.

Trabecular Bone Structure

As mentioned above, the trabecular bone structure is made up of trabeculae that work together to grant it its function. The porosity of trabecular bone varies from 50 to 90% in different bones, and it is generally found at the end of long bones. Overall, the trabecular bone, or spongy bone, is an important part of human anatomy that is responsible for carrying out a variety of regenerative and regular functions.
